My sister has a 2000 outback and the two rear mounts on the Rear diff that sit in the subframe are totally shot and the diff clunks around when you shift.

I am going to take care of it for her but it looks like the mounts are pressed into the subframe and looks like a pain in the a$$ to get out. I am probably going to try using a bearing puller to try and get it out but i was wondering if anybody here had any other suggestions or experience on how to get it out.

Sounds like you're going to need new bushings. Maybe an air hammer to get it out? Brett, speak now...

I know i need new bushings but the current mount is attached (well actually not attached anymore, but it is supposed to be) to a metal sleeve that is tightly pressed into the sub frame. I either need to find a way to get the old sleeves out so i can pound in new ones or find an alternative. I was thinking maybe i could find a round bushing that fits tightly in the old sleeve instead of being attached to it.

I'll get under there and take some pictures tomorrow, maybe that will help

lol yeah I am crazy.. but I do this stuff everyday.. I use a air hammer and the right size punch and push it out oh so slightly.. Might be another way but it is super quick for me and time is money for me. :)

ah, gotcha. For some reason I was thinking impact wrench when 08whiterex said air hammer. I am assuming i will have to drop the rear diff out of the way then right? or at least take off the main drive line and push it forward a little.

I will have to look at it a little closer and maybe go pick up an air hammer. Nate Wade wants like $400 to replace them

Here are some pics of what i am dealing with. I took the nut off the left one and it took the entire stud with it , i hope that's how the other one goes too because it leaves me with more room to work.

I also thought about the possibility of cutting a pie shape out of the sidewall with a sawzall or a chisel bit and an air hammer so it would slide out easier.

Yeah just pull the diff out and use a air hammer or press to push them out.. :) shouldn't be bad at all.

Ooh.....those aren't TOO bad to do, but those ones look thrashed. You might want to check around on Nasioc and Scoobymods for a walkthrough on rear diff bushings. It's definitely an annoying process, but not too difficult.

thanks for the help guys, I bought an air hammer and took care of them this afternoon. It was kind of a pain getting them out and getting the new ones pressed back in but for the most part everything went smoothly.

I had this same problem with my 96' Impreza. Instead of replacing them I just cut some pieces of hard durometer rubber and stuffed them around the bushing and then injected the crap out of it with 3M Windoweld and used a big washer to hold it all in tight. Its been holding super tight since. I use the rear diff as a jack point sometimes and the studs don't even budge in the bushing now. But you did it the proper way. I just didn't want to hassle with all that work in the winter time (last February).
